Canine Hoopers

Hoopers is a great new sport/activity for you and your dog. It is faster than agility but with lower impact on the joints for both dogs and handlers. It is suitable as a pre-agility game for puppies and young dogs who may want to progress on to agility. And it also suitable for older dogs who aren’t quite as mobile as they once were. We will adapt the training to your, or your dog’s requirements. We have a three-legged dog and a dog who has lost her sight who love coming along to hoopers. We can also cater for dogs with ‘reactivity’ issues.

Hoopers is an off-lead sport so a good recall is required. But if this is something your dog is currently struggling with, we can begin training with a ‘long-line’. Most dogs progress to running off-lead after a few sessions.

Scentwork

All dogs have an incredible sense of smell. In fact, ‘smell’ is a dog’s most important sense. For us humans, sight is our primary sense, closely followed by hearing, but for dogs it’s smell (olfaction) that’s the number one way they understand the world.

The sport of Scentwork is based on the same training techniques that are used with ‘professional’ sniffer dogs. While the pros are trained to find drugs, guns and explosives, our dogs are trained on the smell of cloves, truffle oil, and gun oil.

Dogs love the chance to earn rewards by using their noses and, once they have learned the basics, they’ll want to play scentwork as often as possible. It’s a great game for dogs of all shapes and sizes, and just like Hoppers, we can adapt it for dogs with disabilities. The blind dog who does Hoopers, also comes along to Scentwork.
